DIY: Word Art for the Playroom

When Big Brother was a baby, I discovered Elizabeth Mitchell and her sweet, folksy rendition of the song You Are My Sunshine.  On long afternoons, I would turn the volume up and dance around the kitchen with him, singing the words into his little ear as we twirled. Ever since, I've wanted to use the lyrics in a piece of art. They seem so representative of the joy of childhood, family, and loving one another. So today, one more week into the inertia that has developed around decorating the boys playroom (and specifically, sewing them a teepee), I decided to do something simpler and make a piece of word art for their wall.

I hope that one of these days, it will be just a little something among a big, wonderful grouping of child-friendly eye candy, but for now, it's about six less square feet of empty, white wall. And a message that I hope will remind my boys (all three of them) of how deeply adored they are.

The process couldn't have been easier: (1) I mocked up a general idea on the computer, keeping a close eye on font (this one was called Governor). (2) Measured lines 2.5 inches apart and used them to freehand letters of approximately the same size. (3) Alternated colors randomly. (4) Used glue and glitter (I used Martha Stewart from Michaels) to subtly fancy up a few letters. (5) Stuck letters to card stock (you could also use poster board) with spray mount. All materials came from Michaels.

And voila. Something fun to hang on the playroom wall.

I know you were all dying to see my feet today:).

Have a happy friday!

  1. So, so love this! It's my all-time favorite song and Brady still asks me to sing it to him every night. I almost paid $75 for a cute piece of wall art with this same thing painted on it at a fall festival last weekend but this seems doable - thanks for the inspiration!!
